Nancy Lee Obergfell
February 22, 1933 - April 12, 2024

Place of Birth: Sidney, Montana
Residence: Sidney, Montana
Age: 91

Nancy Lee (Putnam) Obergfell was born on February 22, 1933, to Lester and Lucy (Coon) Putnam, sharing her birthday with her father and George Washington. She joined a sister, Clara Grace, growing up on their grandfather Bert Coon’s homestead in the original log cabin which is on the list of historic homes. Nancy and Clara went to the McBride and Brorson Country Schools riding on horseback. After finishing the 8th grade Nancy went to high school in Sidney, Montana. She lived with Ervin and Joyce Johnson during the week through her high school years, earning her lodging by doing housekeeping chores.

After graduating from Sidney High School in 1951, she was united in marriage to Jerry Paul Obergfell on June 2, 1951, at the Coon Homestead. They rented and lived on Charley Thompson’s place until they built a house next to her parents in 1955. Three children were born to this union: Paula in 1952, Rocky in 1956, and John in 1957.

In 1968, they purchased the family farm from Nancy’s parents. She worked doing chores and as a farmhand alongside Jerry until he retired in 1992. They moved to town due to Jerry’s failing health. After Jerry’s death on April 11, 2009, Nancy began to enjoy social events and along with Clara, they formed a quilting group. Nancy shared her quilting talents by making all her great grandkids recycled jeans or t-shirt quilts. She was thrilled beyond words when her namesake, Gwendolyn Nancy was born.

Nancy enjoyed camping and fishing and following her grandkids in their activities and sporting events. Jerry and Nancy experienced a once in a lifetime trip to Australia which was Nancy’s first plane ride. She travelled to Alaska, South Dakota, and western Montana numerous times to see grandkids. Nancy joined the computer era and kept up with family and friends on Facebook, made her own greeting cards, and printed photos that she took of birds and special events.

She was a member of the Peoples Congregational Church, Mayflower Circle, 4-H member and leader, Homemakers Group, Cowbells, and Lambert Saddle Club. She and Jerry participated in many parades riding their horses and saddle club rodeo events keeping that cowboy era alive.

Nancy peacefully passed away on Friday evening, April 12, 2024, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care with family by her side.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Paula (Keith) Bostrom and son, Rocky (Kathy) Obergfell, all of Sidney, MT; daughter-in-law, Maxine Obergfell of Jerome, ID; eight grandchildren, Dustin Bostrom, Shawn Obergfell, Jason (Julie) Obergfell, Mindee (Chad) Riedel, Keela (Dan) Heavrin, Joshua Obergfell, Dallas (Noelle) Obergfell, and Zane (Paige) Obergfell;17 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

I just met Nancy after she moved to Extended Care. She sat at the dinner table and played Bingo with my Mother Ruth Pederson. She was a delight to visit with. Mom already misses her so much.

Nancy was a great friend, always had a smile on her face. A classmate of my husband and they enjoyed many class of ‘51 lunches together with others for many years. She was my idol when I attended Brorson School 5 grades behind her. RIP Nancy, we’re going to miss you a lot.
