Owyn "Jay" Fuglie
December 27, 1954 - January 12, 2021

Place of Birth: Hettinger, ND
Residence: Williston, North Dakota
Age: 66

Owyn Jay Fuglie, 66, died Tuesday, January 12 at his home in Williston.

“Jay” to his friends and “Jaybird” to his family was born in Hettinger, ND, Dec. 27, 1954, the third of seven children of Dr. O.J. and Phyllis (Boehmer) Fuglie.
He graduated from Hettinger High School and Dickinson State College in Dickinson, ND.

After a brief teaching career in Carrington, ND, he entered the insurance industry and had a long, successful career as a Farmers Union Insurance agent in Williston.

He was married to Rosalie Sonsalla in 1986. They had no children and later divorced.

Jay was an avid, low-handicap golfer, and scored a hole-in-one at the Carrington Country Club in 1985. Health issues forced his retirement from the game a few years ago. He grew up hunting and fishing, skills he learned from his dad, and spent much time afield with his brothers and brothers-in-law throughout his life.

He was a regular winter visitor to Hawaii, and knew the very best hotels, restaurants, watering holes and beaches. His last wish was to have his ashes scattered on Hawaii beaches, and he left a trust account with funds for his entire family to take him there to fulfill that wish, which will likely happen later this year.

He is survived by his siblings and their spouses, including Jim Fuglie and Lillian Crook, Laurelle and Lyle Hilden, and Jill and John Power, all of Bismarck; Blair and Phyllis Fuglie, Ephrata, WA; Sue and Mike Konstant, Spearfish, SD; and Blake and Robin Fuglie, Sioux Falls, SD. He has joined his parents and his niece McKenna Fuglie in heaven.

Jay was about as good-hearted a man as the city of Williston has ever known. His brothers and sisters and their spouses and children, his Farmers Union family, and his friends, business associates and fellow Elks members in his adopted hometown, will miss him.

Jay was one of the best people I have had the pleasure to know. When you spoke with him, you always left feeling uplifted. He went out of his way to show support to all who were lucky enough to know him. I was truly blessed to call him a friend. I hope knowing he will be returning to Hawaii to stay gives those who love him some peace, as there is no place he would rather be.

My condolences to Jay's family. Jay was a great guy and he will missed. We had our offices next to each other and spent a lot of time visiting throughout the years. He was a very kind and giving person. We had talked about how he set things up for his family to spread his ashes in Hawaii, what an awesome thing for him to do and perfect place for his ashes to be spread. Rest easy Jay.

Shocked. Deeply saddened. Jay is my oldest daughter’s godfather. Not something you ask a person to do unless you have deep trust, admiration, and love for someone. And we chose him! I still feel the same way about this man. Funny? He was hilarious. Great at telling a joke. Kind. Great listener. Oh....cooking? His grilled salmon was unbelievable! Jay. I hope you have found peace and fly high with the angels! I love you, my friend. And will never forget you. Never. Prayers for peace and comfort to his grieving family.

Jay's office was next to mine so I saw him connect with his clients on a daily basis. He was a great agent and you could see that people enjoyed working with him. Jay and I talked daily, about anything and everything. He was a kind, compassionate and generous man, with a great sense of humor. He was so supportive of our family during our daughter's battle with cancer and her death. He was always ready to listen, talk about her and cheer me up on those difficult days. He would talk about his family and his niece, McKenna. We shared grief and laughter. He talked of his plans for his death and how he wanted his family to take his ashes to Hawaii. I pray that his family finds comfort and peace in their memories of Jay and when they say good-bye as they scatter his ashes in his favorite place, remember that it is exactly what he wanted. We will miss you, our friend. Carla and Gary Adamson

Jay was a great guy with a great sense of humor and always so interesting to talk to. I cut his hair for years and knew him from the Elks. I have several handwritten recipes he gave me that he acquired from his many “ food trips”. He was the first person I had ever met to call himself a food snob... He loved great food. I will cherish those recipes and his hand writing with jokes tucked in the recipes forever... My deepest sympathy to Jays family.... Leone Heller

There aren't enough words to say all there is to say about Jay, the life he lived and the lives he touched. I loved working with and for Jay. I will cherish those years.
Everyone knew Jay and Jay knew everyone.
To his Friends he vacationed with in Hawaii, Jay loved and cherished you so very much. His best and favorite memories were with you all there.
I didn't personally know Jay's family but I enjoyed hearing his stories and visiting with him about them. He spoke of them with so much love, they meant the world to him, that was for sure!
Jay could talk anyone's ear off. But every conversation was a good and meaningful one with him. I learned so much from him. You could laugh, cry, complain, and trade a recipe all in one sitting with him. He knew EVERYTHING :)
Jay was a great boss and agent, a proud brother and uncle, a compassionate friend, caring member of the community and AMAZING cook! He will surely be missed by many.
Cheers Jay! I hope your Heaven is filled with tons of sunshine, sandy beaches, and delicious food and drink!

Jay drove me home from Music Camp a million years ago. I remember being kind of anxious when Mom told me it was happening because I didn't know him at all, he was older - I was thinking, "This is going to be the longest ride ever." I was so wrong!! I don't think I've ever laughed so much. Jay was the nicest guy and great at putting people at ease. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I am so deeply saddened to hear of Jay's passing! I have known Jay for years, he has also been one of the greatest insurance agents there ever was, he always went above and beyond for his clients to get them the best rate. Everytime I would go in to see him what would take 5 mins ended up being a half hour, he was always asking got any trips planned, or do ya plan to buy anymore toys, and he would tell me all the places I needed to go to, man I truly am going to miss him, definitely won't be the same and there will be some pretty big shoes to fill, rest easy Jay, and enjoy your eternal life.

I've known Jay for almost as long as his family. We were roommates in college and he was the best man at our wedding. He wasn't a very good student, drove us in a terrible car (silver bullet) from the church to the reception, kept all of his friends away from his sisters at DSU, and was a great tennis, golf player, and friend. Oh, the stories I could tell...well okay just one: When Jay left teaching and started selling crop insurance my Dad (a retired farmer) asked, "Jay, what do you know about crops?" Jay said, "Absolutely nothing, that's the beauty of it, I'm a fresh set of eyes." He went on to say that he'd listen to one farmer's analysis of crops and simply repeat that story at the next farmer's home so he could sell a policy...and didn't understand a word he was saying. He actually didn't know wheat from oats or corn! I will hold the memories of our good times close, and I'll catch up with him on the first tee sometime down the road. And, now that I'm thinking about it: he never invited me to join him in Hawaii...maybe we weren't such good friends after all. My condolences.

Jay was such a good friend and will be missed. i made a great hire when I hired Jay to be the agent in the newly founded Cooperative Insurance Agency. Jay did a great job and qualified for several award trips. We had a great time hanging out on these trips. He put up with my poor golf game in several golf scrambles.
Glad that you will be making one last trip to Hawaii. Rest in Peace my friend!

Jay was a neighbor of mine for years. He was the best neighbor a person could have. Always shoveling snow, raking leaves, and mowing the grass for his close neighbors. And always a smile and a wave when i saw him in passing. My deepest sympathy to his close friends and family.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Jay. I worked with him through phone and email conversations multiple times each week. He always brought a smile to my face with his witty comments and good nature. He was honest, respectful and to the point. "Hey Steph, this is Jay. Here's what I got.." and at times would add "you can't make this up." He made me chuckle and we'd go on to have an interesting conversation about whatever it was he was dealing with at the time. After discussing business Jay always made time to ask how my family and I were doing and would end the conversation with words of appreciation for the help. Jay will be greatly missed by all of us in the Jamestown office. My condolences to all who knew Jay. He touched the hearts of many.

I knew Jay for may years and I'm saddened that such a caring and wonderful person should pass at such a young age. I remember him as a very good friend and will always remember the laughs together and the good times golfing even though he would beat me 10 out 10 times. He never seemed to have a bad day and was always upbeat and positive. That's what I will remember most about him, and the immediate happy, indelible impression he made on every one he met. No matter how many good things I say about him, I feel I could never say enough. He will be truly missed. RIP, Jay.

I was so saddened to here of his passing. I first met Jay when I was a little girl and he would come to my parents house and talk about insurance and many other things. As I got into my 20s he became my insurance agent as well. He always kept telling me "If you want your insurance to go down you have to get married." I always replied "I'm working on that, lol." Rest in Peace Jay. We will miss you and your kind soul.

It’s been over a week since we learned of Jay’s passing and still feel that raw pain. He had such a way to make everyone feel special and always asked or commented on our boys. He loved to cook and often asked me when I would be bringing caramel rolls to the CU again. The world was a better place with Jay in it.

My sympathies to the Fuglie family on your loss. Growing up in Hettinger, the Fuglies were neighbors and Jim, Laurelle, and Jay were frequent playmates, especially the ball games in the lot behind their house. Jay’s obituary says it all of what a great guy he is. I will miss visiting with him on my infrequent stops at the Williston Credit Union. God Bless Jay!
