Karla Martha Akovenko was born January 3, 1944 in Bismarck, ND to Charles and Dorothy Shreck Anderson. She attended grade school in rural Almont, ND and graduated from Christian Academy in Minot, ND. After high school she attended college in Dickinson, ND and the School of Cosmetology in Bismarck, ND.
On June 4, 19752 she married Ernest Akovenko at First Lutheran Church in Watford City, ND, and to this union two sons were born, Shane in 1974 and Lance in 1976. Karla owned the Powder Puff salon in Watford City for several years, and after she was married she decided that she didn’t like driving to work in the winter. Karla enjoyed crocheting, crafts, reading, gardening and canning, and was an excellent cook and baker. She was a longtime member of the Ranch Creek Homemaker’s.
Karla is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Dorothy and her son Shane who passed away on January 25, 2012.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years Ernest, her son Lance (Janis) Akovenko of Underwood, MN, and their children McKenna of Bismarck, ND and Sienna of Underwood, MN.
Karla passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2021, at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson, ND, where she had been since October of 2020.

Ernie and family, I am so sad to hear of Karla’s passing. Did you know she was my first boss? We had so much fun at the Powder Puff! I learned many life lessons there! I was so excited when she offered me the chance to purchase the beauty shop. Karla was a wonderful hair dresser. She loved her family and being a homemaker. She will be missed. Karen

With profound & deepest sympathy for you and your family. Mere words cannot possibly express the sadness we feel. Thousands of memories & all those cups of coffee with Karla fills our minds and hearts. The many hairdo's, laughter, and the wonderful meals we shared. She greatly missed by us all, stay strong, be well, and love you all.

I was so sad to hear of Karla's passing. How can you share what a over 30 year frienship meant. All the pinochle games, sitting on the porch, our annual trips to Sidney, so many heart to heart to hearts, enjoying her good meals and so many memories. Such a wonderful person with a beautiful heart whose friendship I treasured. Karla will be missed by many. My deepest sympathies to Ernie, Lance.and all the family. Rest in Peace my friend. Love You!

Ernie and family. Karla gave me my first job at the Powder Puff when I finished Beauty School, 1972. It was the beginning of a career I had planned for, for years. I will be forever grateful to her. We had a great time always at work. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your memories are yours forever.
