Dorothy Berce
December 24, 1928 - December 17, 2021

Residence: Fargo, ND formerly of Williston, ND

Dorothy Louise (Monson) Berce entered heaven on December 17, 2021, in her home in Fargo, North Dakota, surrounded by family.

Dorothy was born in Williston, North Dakota, on December 23, 1928, in the home of a mid-wife, to Tressie (Bergh) Monson and Fred Monson. Dorothy was the eldest of five siblings. Dorothy was an honor student at Williston High School, and during High School, she worked in the office at the Harmon Park Pool with her sister, Beverly. Dorothy also worked for Snyder Theaters part-time for many years, where she met her future husband, Leonard Berce, after years of his persistently asking her out. After High School, Dorothy was employed with the Williams County Social Services for nearly forty years, retiring in 1990. Dorothy advanced from secretary to human service program administrator during her lengthy career with Williams County Social Services. As human service program administrator, Dorothy was responsible for ensuring the welfare programs were accountable to state and federal standards and found the majority of funding for the programs. Dorothy was admired by her colleagues and quoted to be dependable, witty, caring, and authoritative.

Dorothy married Leonard Berce on July 19, 1953 at First Lutheran Church in Williston on a hot, 105-degree day. Together, Dorothy and Leonard had four wonderful and caring children. Dorothy enjoyed ice skating, hosting hundreds of family meals, visiting her large extended family, and traveling. Dorothy was a decades long member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Williston performing thousands of hours of community service over her 80 plus years as a Williston resident. Dorothy also participated in a birthday club, meeting with other women on a monthly basis. After her husband, Leonard’s passing in 2009, Dorothy moved to Fargo, North Dakota in 2012 to be closer to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also became a member of the Edgewood Vista Community in Fargo.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Fred Monson, Sr.; mother, Tressie Monson; brother, Fred Monson, Jr.; sister, Beverly Snyder, and her husband, Leonard Berce. Survivors include her children, Lisa (Berce) Simon, Cynthia (Mike) Skorick, Sheri (Tom) Nester, and Bradford Berce; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Powell and Jackie Klimpel and several nieces and nephews.

Dear Lisa, Cindy, Sherri, and Brad,
We send our sincere sympathies and hugs to your family at the loss of your Mom. Growing up next to your family in Williston brings back these memories. My Mom would send us kids over to Mrs. Berce's house because she was the professional tooth puller in the neighborhood. We could not run from Dorothy because nobody runs from Mrs. Berce. She meant business. She would take out her, I am sure, well sterilized pliers....and before we knew it (I am sure we were in a headlock) we would see Mrs. Berce with a big smile on her face holding a white pearly object between the sterile dental device. Also I remember vividly playing Barbie dolls and the board game" The Dating Game" in your backyard on a blanket. And of course who could forget the pool the Berce's donated to the Arnson's. We felt like we had a resort in our backyard when we set up the 3'x5' by 1'deep pool for the summer. Just a few good memories for me. God Bless your family as you gather and remember your beautiful Mamma.

Berce Family - I cherish the memories of getting to know Dorothy over the past 9 years that she lived next door to my mother. She had such great wit and humor. I always left with a smile on my face. My mom truly had a great neighbor and friend. Edgewood Village is not going to be the same with out Dorothy. Prayers to you all.

Dear Lisa, Cindy, Sheri, and Brad, As I look at the picture of your mama in this obituary, I am transported back to childhood days when we were next door neighbors. With a mere look over the top of her glasses, she could still a naughty moment in the making...and then she'd smile. I mentioned that to her once when I saw her in church at Gloria Dei years ago and she claimed 'the look' was her best weapon for keeping kids in line. I later came to appreciate that look as one of the many ways your mama showed how much she cared. Mamas - we exclaim we'll never be like ours when we are kids but then strive to be like ours when we're older and perhaps a bit wiser. God's peace as you say your final earthly goodbyes to your mama today.
