Peggy Jean Obergfell Zadow was born on June 23, 1929, to Beulah (McBride) and John Obergfell. Peggy was the baby out of the 5 children (Gussie, Agnes, Jerry, Doris, and Peggy).
Peggy lived in town while she attended school. Her chores around the house were dusting and doing the dishes and just helping to take care of the house. Being as she lived in town, she loved it when they would go out to Uncle Matts, so she could ride horses. One of her winter activities was roller skating at the courthouse.
Her main transportation to school, church, or even a friend’s house, was her own two feet. Her dad, John, worked as a salesman at The Ford dealership, so every now and then he would come home with a car, and they would get a ride that day. But other than that, it was walking everywhere.
Peggy kept busy in school, attending the school dances whenever they had one. When she was a freshman in high school, she started working at the Princess Theater. Her jobs included ushering, selling popcorn, and selling tickets. She worked there until she was a senior in high school in 1947.
In the time that she was working at the theater, someone special came along; Roy Zadow. The way Peggy tells the story is that Roy bought her flowers and they saw a movie together. The way Roy tells the story, she was sitting next to some other guy, and when Peggy got up to use the bathroom, he told that guy to move over and he took that spot. When Peggy sat back down, she was sitting next to Roy and the rest was history. Now whoever is telling the truth, we will never know. One thing is for certain: they were crazy about each other.
On October 15, 1947, Peggy married the love of her life, Roy Zadow. Regardless of how they got together, they sure knew how to make it work. They were happily married for 73 years!
March 16, 1949, their little bundle of joy, Greg, was born. Then in May of 1951, they moved out to the farm where they lived for over 40 years. They had cattle for a short period of time and then switched to sheep. After years of sheep, they had to switch it up again and had hogs for the last 20 years they were on the farm.
In 1954, Peggy and Roy started working at the stockyards. Peggy was the clerk up until 1978, but she still worked in the office on sale days. Peggy also worked at REA from 1946 and 1947 doing secretary work.
In 1992, they bought a house in town, and it wasn’t too much longer that Peggy retired from the Livestock Market. In 1992, granddaughter Katie was born, and in 1995, granddaughter Kali was born. Once they were old enough for school, and swim, and everything else, Peggy was on board to take them to their activities and watch them after school. She was at all the Sunday School Christmas programs and seeing Santa after the programs. Peggy and Kali were good at walking down to Shirley Obergfell’s for their morning coffee after a sleep over.
Peggy and Roy lived in their town house until the end of 2020 and after being in and out of the hospital for a while, the decision to move to extended care was ultimately the best choice. In November of 2021 she got to meet her great-grandson, Lincoln Powell. Those two had an inseparable bond, and whenever he came around, she couldn’t help but smile ear to ear! Peggy lived there happily for the last couple years of her life. She was nominated resident of the year for 2022 for Extended Care…which just shows how much of an impact she made on everyone even in the later years of her life.
