Stephanie Renee Friend
April 29, 1985 - June 11, 2025

Place of Birth: Glendive, Montana
Residence: Fairview, Montana
Age: 40

Stephanie Renee Hostetler Friend was born on April 29, 1985, to Steve and Kathy Hostetler. From the very beginning, she brought joy, light, and laughter into the lives of everyone who knew her. She lived life to the fullest—always the life of the party, always bringing the fun—and truly the sweetest of the three sisters.

A 2003 graduate of Sidney High School, Stephanie followed her creative heart to Beauty School in Bismarck, North Dakota. After earning her license, she moved to Kansas City with her sister Samantha, where she spent several years building her career and enjoying city life. Whether she was behind the chair doing hair, exploring Kansas City through property title work, or brightening the halls of Ferrellgas, Steph made friends everywhere she went. Her warm smile, quick wit, and joyful energy were unforgettable. When she decided to move back home, Ferrellgas—long before remote work was the norm—immediately set her up to work from Montana, a true testament to her value and the relationships she cultivated.

Steph’s passion for life showed up in everything she did—but especially in her love for horses and volleyball. She discovered her love of horses as a young girl, spending countless hours riding, caring for animals through 4-H, and eventually competing in barrel racing throughout high school. While living in Kansas City, she continued to nurture that passion by giving horseback riding lessons in her spare time.

Steph played volleyball in high school and later found a sand volleyball league in Kansas City that became one of her weekly joys. After moving back home, she continued playing in a local league and was also able to return to beloved traditions like the annual Culbertson Wagon Train, a fall event she enjoyed.

One of Steph’s greatest joys was passing her love of horses down to her children. She frequently brought Trace and Londyn to Grandma Kathy and Grandpa Jake’s for rides. Her heart was always focused on making sure her kids had strong, loving relationships with their family. She spent many evenings taking them to Papa Rick and Grandma Patty’s, where they were treated to cakes and cookies lovingly made by Patty, and plenty of laughter while riding the lawn mower with Rick.

Steph also had a heart for adventure and loved to travel. Whether it was a quick weekend getaway or a tropical escape, she found joy in the journey. She made unforgettable memories on trips to Deadwood, or going to Mexico, and during her time in Kansas City, she went on a mission trip to Costa Rica. She loved new places, new people, and making the most of every moment—always living life with intention, laughter, and love.

It was back home in 2012 that Steph’s greatest adventure began: family. Not long after returning, a dear friend introduced her to the love of her life, Troy Friend. The two quickly bonded over their shared love of the outdoors—especially kayaking and shed hunting. On June 29, 2019, Steph and Troy were married on a bluff overlooking the Yellowstone River, a breathtaking moment that perfectly captured their love and adventurous spirits.

In 2020, Stephanie’s dream of motherhood came true with the arrival of their son, Trace Steven Richard, on April 9. Two years later, their hearts grew even fuller when their daughter, Londyn Reigh, was born on June 1, 2022. Stephanie thrived as a mother—her heart found its home in the beautiful chaos of family life. Her days were filled with laughter, snuggles, and love, and she found joy in every little moment. As the kids grew, kayaks gave way to a boat, and Sundays became cherished “Family Fun Days” spent on the river with friends, sunshine, and memories in the making.

Stephanie passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at the Mckenzie County Hospital in Watford City, North Dakota.

Stephanie is survived by her husband, Troy; her beloved children, Trace and Londyn; her adopted parents (in-laws), Rick and Patty Friend; her mother, Kathy (Jake) Wyman; her sisters, Samantha (Wade) Johnson and Angie (Todd) Flynn; her niece, Taylor (Arron) Ryan; her great-niece, Vanya; her nephews, Kyle and Elijah Flynn; and a large extended family of cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends who truly became family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Steven Hostetler; and her grandparents, Bob and Christy Hostetler and Dick and Marlene Richey.

Oh I knew stephanie from feral gas, and she also did my hair. Her and I would constantly talk about family, friends and work. I went to ireland she would watch our dogs and even stayed at our house when we went to ireland. She was the sweetest greatest person I have ever met her heart. We're so pure. She used to worry that she would never find someone. Because she always wanted to have children. As my chili was disappointed when she moved to montana.I was very happy when she finally met someone and started a family. Life got in the way we lost touch. But I will never forget how sweet she was. And I'm sure her children will be just so sweet. Is she had been to everyone. Rest in peace, Stephanie. You were taken away way too. Young and you had so much more to give. Prayers to your family, especially the children, your husband and Samantha. I know you'll watch over them all.

Stephanie and I became friends when she lived in Kansas City and worked for Ferrellgas. She was a joy to work with and brought humor to the workplace. When she moved back to Montana, we remained in touch via email. I always enjoyed receiving pictures of her children and hearing the craziness of her personal life and work balance. Humor was always a part of her emails. My heart aches for Troy and the children and all of us who knew Stephanie. But SHE knew God had a plan for her, and even though the plan may not have ended the way we would have desired, Stephanie is safe in the arms of Jesus. May this knowledge bring comfort to all of her family and friends during this time of grieving.

You all know how I know Stephanie. She had a smile that lit up the room and a gutsy determination that got her where she wanted to go. As her 4-H leader and family friend we spent some time together. She was a fiesty little burger and a talented horsewoman. The world lost a beautiful soul when Stephanie left us. If I could take your pain and carry it for each of you, I would. You all know you are in my heart and prayers. I will keep Stephanie in my heart and mind till I join her. Then we will have Monday nite lessons forever!

I’m so sad to hear this news. Stephanie and I were in the same grade and graduated together in 2003 from Sidney. I remember us being in science class together sitting at the same table our senior year. She was always a sweetheart to me and we had alot of laughs. Deepest condolences to everyone in Stephanie’s family. May she rest in peace.

Stephanie and I worked together at Ferrellgas and spent countless hours playing volleyball together. Her happiness was contagious and she was always making friends and including them in our social gatherings thus expanding my circle. I feel blessed that I got to spend time with her. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends. She will be missed.

My heart goes out to her family, especially her precious children, who are suffering such a great loss. For all who have been touched by her presence, we are lucky to have known her. I only knew her for a short time but definitely agree with her memorial stating she could make friends anywhere. I felt this warmth when I first met her. Her presence will be missed but live on by her imprint she has left. Her wings were earned!

My dear cousin, Kathy, I'm so sorry to hear about Stephanie! When our parents saw each other at the Sidney 4H house show so many years ago, we had no idea what a blessing it was going to be connecting with you & your family! Karli & Steph had some good times together. May Jesus hold you close & give you lasting memories of sweet Stephanie!
