Celebrating the Life of Frederick “Fred” Reed

Frederick “Fred” Reed, age 67, of Sidney, Montana, passed away on April 21, 2026, in Sidney, Montana. A lifelong Montanan at heart, Fred’s story was one of resilience, humor, and deep connection to family.

Fred was born on January 29, 1959, in Sidney, Montana, to Frank and Vivian Reed. He grew up surrounded by family, learning early the values of hard work, loyalty, and laughter.
Fred spent his early years in Savage, where he attended the local school and grew up as the quintessential middle child, number five of ten. Surrounded by siblings and rooted in farm life, those early days were filled with shared responsibilities, close bonds, and lessons that shaped who he would become. It was during these early years that Fred developed a lasting curiosity about the world and a deep, steady faith—both of which would guide him throughout his life largely inspired by his mother, Vivian. During high school, Fred wasn’t the biggest guy on the field, but you’d never know it from the way he played. As a teenager, he had a fearless streak a mile wide—charging into tackles, diving for loose balls, and never once backing down from someone twice his size. He didn’t rely on bulk or brute force; it was grit, instinct, and a stubborn refusal to quit that set him apart. No matter the score or the odds, Fred held his own every single time, earning respect the hard way—with heart, hustle, and a whole lot of guts.

Fred married Debbie on May 12, 1978, in Sidney, Montana. Their story began in an unexpected place—working together in seismography —where flirty winks and easy smiles slowly turned into something deeper. What started as a spark on the job grew into a lasting partnership built on love, laughter, and shared experiences. Together, they created a life centered on family and standing side by side through everything that came their way. Fred’s greatest joy was his family. He loved his children and grandchildren with a full, open heart, and he made sure they felt it in all the little and big ways that mattered. Whether he was lighting fireworks that lit up the night, games on the Wii or a game of chess, laughing through a round of mini golf, or simply spending time together, he had a gift for turning ordinary moments into lasting memories. More than anything, Fred showed his love through presence, playfulness, and the unmistakable warmth he gave to each and every one of them. Fred learned the value of hard work early, putting in long hours alongside his family in the family business, Reed Construction, where he ran heavy equipment with skill and pride. Those early days shaped his strong work ethic and steady determination. He later worked for the city and county, continuing to build his experience, before deciding to pursue higher education at Montana State University, the home of his beloved Bobcats—where he took the next step toward building his future.

Fred earned his Bachelor of Science in Business, a milestone that reflected his determination and commitment to building a meaningful career. Fred’s career took him across Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. After graduation, Fred began his career working for the state, completing audits and building a reputation for precision and integrity. He went on to serve as CFO for the Fort Peck Tribes for five years, where his leadership and steady guidance made a lasting impact. Later, as a CPA with the Department of Defense at the Rapid City National Guard, Fred was known for his dedication, leadership, and unwavering professionalism. Throughout his career, he earned deep respect for his work ethic and leadership, leaving behind a legacy of excellence.

Fred found joy in the simple rhythm of a round of golf and the deeper rhythm of long, thoughtful conversations with his brothers about the meaning of life. He never settled for surface answers—he was the kind of person who asked why, who listened closely, and who kept digging until things made sense in a deeper way. Even when perspectives differed, Fred met people with genuine respect, valuing what they believed and the experiences that shaped them.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Debbie Reed of Sidney, Montana.
