Robert "Bob" Liebl, 90, of West Fargo, ND, formerly of Stanley and Bismarck, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2026.
Bob was born on November 9, 1935 in Lebanon, MO, to Alfred and Bertha Liebl. He was the second of twin boys and grew up surrounded by the values of hard work and service to others.
On July 6, 1958, Bob married Joan Horne. Together they shared 68 years of marriage, raising two sons, Jeff and Joel.
Bob served his country in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Bliss, TX, from 1957 to 1958, and was honorably discharged.
Following his military service, Bob began his career with the North Dakota Highway Patrol Truck Regulatory Division in 1958. His 35 years with the Highway Patrol took him to communities throughout North Dakota, including Bottineau, Bismarck, and Stanley.
Even while working full-time for the State of North Dakota, Bob enjoyed keeping busy with a variety of other jobs and community service. Over the years he worked in a retail gun shop, stocked shelves at a grocery store, worked as a farm hand, delivered newspapers on a rural route, and served as a funeral transport driver. He also served as Mayor of Flickertail Village in Stanley, where he took pride in maintaining the grounds and caring for the community.
Throughout his life, Bob lived in Stanley, Bottineau, Bismarck, St. Anthony, Mandan, and West Fargo.
Bob had a lifelong passion for collecting. His many collections included matchbooks, gold, hats, belt buckles, stamps, pens, coins, and firearms. His favorite was the Savage Model 99 rifle; this was even reflected in his personalized license plate. He saw value where others saw ordinary. Whether it was an old coin, a belt buckle, or a memory, he knew the best things in life were worth holding on to.
Bob enjoyed hunting with friends and his son Jeff and attended Appaloosa horse shows with his son Joel. He also looked forward to playing pinochle with family and friends. He enjoyed going to gun shows and made many friends at these events.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Bertha Liebl; his twin brother, Ralph Liebl; and his brothers-in-law, Roy Marmon, Henry "Hank" Erie, Lowell Vedaa, and Myron Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Liebl, West Fargo; his sons, Jeff Liebl, Mandan, and Joel (Lori) Liebl, West Fargo; his grandchildren, Michaela (Jenna), Hopkins, Mn; and Brett (Emily), Fargo; his sister, Mary Johnson, Stanley; sisters-in-law Jean Marmon, LeHigh Acres, Florida; Judy Vedaa, Stanley; Jill and Allen Johnson, Stanley; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, beginning at 12:00 noon, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Stanley, North Dakota.
