James "Jim" Domaskin
April 19, 1951 - January 3, 2021

Place of Birth: Minot, North Dakota
Residence: Ross, North Dakota
Age: 69

James “Jim” Domaskin, 69, of rural Ross, ND passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at his residence in Ross, ND.

Jim was born in Minot, ND, on April 19, 1951, to Helen (Rolf) and Emil Domaskin. He graduated from Stanley High School in 1969. He attended the University of North Dakota before graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree from Idaho State University. Jim married Mary (Heffner) Domaskin in Idaho Falls, ID, on May 6, 1972. He worked at the U.S. nuclear testing laboratory in Idaho Falls for several years. After his father died, Jim, Mary and their family moved to Stanley. They took over the family farm south of Ross and learned to farm together. Jim also laid carpet for Springan Furniture for many years. In all, Jim and Mary farmed together for 40 years and raised three daughters.

A lifelong hunter, Jim cared deeply about conserving wildlife and encouraging new generations of bow hunters. In addition to hunting on the farm, he bow hunted in Montana, Alaska, Texas, Georgia and many other states, along with Canada and a couple once-in-a-lifetime hunting trips to Namibia. He enjoyed fishing Lake Sakakawea and deep sea fishing in Cabo, Mexico with good friends. Jim leaves
behind friends from across the U.S. and world who care about wildlife and hunting as much as he did.

If there was anything Jim loved more than hunting, it was a good story, especially if a prank was involved. He claimed he was a homebody, but somehow he was the last one to leave a party and could make a few errands stretch out all day with conversation and coffee. In Jim’s memory, please share a story or a joke with your friends and family.

In addition to his wife, Mary; survivors include daughters, Jenny (Troy) Smith of Berthold, ND, Sara (Peter) Miller of Bozeman, MT, and Andrea (Quang Trieu) Domaskin of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Jake, Courtney, Taylor and Justin Smith and Helen and Ian Trieu; niece, Becky (Steve Wagner) Huestis and nephew, David (Christine) Huestis.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; Emil and Helen Domaskin; his sister, Barbara (Domaskin) Huestis and brother-in-law, Kirby Huestis.

We delivered Jim’s mail for many years and one day while speaking to Jim he told me he was getting ready to go hunt Javelina in Arizona, I believe. A few weeks later I seen him again so I asked him how his hunt went and he said “I went all the way to Arizona to shoot a 35 pound pig”. I sure got a kick out of that. I pray for the family and hope they always remember the good times they had and never forget that this is not the end.

Very sorry to the family for your loss !! I first knew Jim when I was an eighth grader from Kenmare and I stayed at his home because a blizzard in Stanley caused the teams to stay overnight after the eighth grade BB tournament !! Jim was a good man and I was happy to have known his family through the Stanley school system !! Our prayers and thoughts are with the family !!

Jim made this for Dad in memory of Pinto
Dear Mary and Family, Jim was a great friend of our family and especially of my Dad (Shorty). I have many great memories of deer camp at the farm with them both and a great story about the buck named 'Pinto'. Jim was a true sportsman! Craig, Carla, Dawn, Carin and Chad
